Hey Guys! Hope that you all enjoyed last weeks entry. Some of the kids said they got to watch themselves on my blog which is great. Today I wanted to start my first academic blog with Place Value. Place value is not a new concept to the students. They have been learning about the value of a digit since 1st grade. In first grade they learned to the hundreds place, 2nd grade was to the thousands, third is to the hundred thousands and fourth will be to the Billions period. Every year there is less and less time to reteach the previous years places values so mastery in this skill is very important each and every year. That is why I'm hoping that these blogs can help you guys to do some extra practice at home.
Let's first start with your typical place value chart. I go over in my video how important it is for the kids to be able to draw a place value chart and plug in different numbers. Above is an example of a place value chart that a 3rd grader would draw to help them solve a problem. The place value chart in the picture goes to the millions place. I would NOT have my kids draw their chart to the millions. Instead I would have them stop at the hundred thousands. We really really want the kids to draw this chart on EVERY place value problem they have. This video is meant to show you how to plug numbers into a place value chart and also to give you some examples of place value questions that you could ask at home. All you have to do is roll some dice to create a number or just change the numbers on your own. The volume is a bit hard to hear at times so you may have to turn your computer's volume all the way up. Also, Please forgive the horrible angle in the second video. My awesome videographer (Mrs Guerra) left me to prepare for Open House so I was on my own. Unfortunately, hair and makeup didn't show up for my video either so I look a little homeless. Sorry. :(
...You may also need a Dramamine for the second video, it gets a little crazy when I'm moving around. Okay, that's all. Enjoy and let me know if you need more or less. Thanks!
I hope that you enjoyed these and that they helped a little. If these videos sparked any new questions or concerns please let me know. I will try to film with an ipad next time and hopefully that helps with some of that background buzzing. If I don't hear from anyone about more place value problems then my next video will most likely be over order numbers in the next few days. Other than that, please let me know what you think. Have a great day!
